About the Artist & Scholar
A journey of rigorous academic excellence and profound artistic dedication to Hindustani classical vocal music
Dr. Kumar Ambarish Chanchal
Dr. Kumar Ambarish Chanchal is a prominent Hindustani classical vocalist of the legendary Kirana Gharana tradition. He commenced his early musical training under the tutelage of Guru Sri R.V. Kavimandan in Varanasi. Later, he refined his artistic nuances under the guidance of Pandit Madhav Guni, a stalwart of the Kirana Gharana. His artistic journey was further enriched during his doctoral research years by close association and guidance from the iconic vocalist, Smt. Gangubai Hangal.
Dr. Chanchal has mastered diverse forms of music, spanning classical (Khayal), semi-classical, and devotional genres such as Bhajan and Thumri. His rendition of the Kirana style is marked by detailed, emotive swara exploration (alap) and dynamic note combinations (tan) that capture the soul of Hindustani music.
Since 2006, Dr. Chanchal has contributed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Vocal Music at the Faculty of Performing Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. In his double role as an artist and academician, he has guided dozens of doctoral students and published over 35 research papers on Indian classical music.
